Lao Zhong Zhong Five Spice Stall

This stall used to be located at Jackson Food Centre. The ngor hiang was served piping hot. But the last time I bought it, it did seem to me that they had fried it again. It tasted abit different though. The chilli was just as nice.

Braised Duck Rice - Hup Seng Duck Rice

Dac had first brought me to try the Bak Ku Teh at Block 22 but I had actually fallen in love with the Salted Vegetable Duck Soup at this store instead. I had gone back numerous times for the soup. It is sour and that is what is call good Salted Vegetable Duck Soup. The Braised Duck here is also pretty nice.

Bak Ku Teh - Sin Ming Road

Not a big fan of Bak Ku Teh though. I find the soup too peppery to my liking. What amazes me is the size of the pork rib. I call them "Flintstones". Brought my parents there and they liked it too.

Hill Street Char Kway Teow

This Char Kway Teow is the real deal. The texture and taste of the Kway Teow is absolutely fabulous. Plus, he uses a liberal amount of crunchy sweet Towgay (Bean Sprouts) and Gu Chai (Chives) which combines together to culminate in an explosion of taste and texture in your mouth.

I am not someone who likes towgay, but this char kway teow makes me lick my plate
clean. Hee Hee!!

Wah Kee Cooked Food

Good Food always come with long queues!!!! Dac had queued for over half an hour to get his hands on the cuttlefish kangkong.

I personally find the dish tasted better with bee hoon as it is not so sweet. The servings were also quite generous. I would definitely come back for more.

Lor Mee @ Bukit Purmei

This is one Lor Mee stall that i particularly like.

Apparently, this lor mee stall at Bukit Purmei is related to the famous Tiong Bahru Lor Mee which used to be located at Tiong Bahru market. The Tiong Bahru Lor Mee stall has now shifted to Bukit Batok. I find that this is much better than the one one Bukit Batok.

My personal verdict on this lor mee: It tastes superb and is totally value for money because a decent bowl of lor mee only costs $2. Can order $2 and add ingredients for additional $1.

The ingredient list of the lor mee included fish cake, char siew, bean sprouts and mini fried flour bits. My favourite ingredient was the mini fried flour bits. The flour bits were very well-fried and crispy, and did not turn soft even after being soaked in the lor mee stock.

Paradise on Earth

Had a sudden craving for steamboat and got Dac to bring me here to try the stemaboat here. The were a few choices of soup base and we settled on having the satay soup and the dried scallop soup. The ingredients were fresh and tasty. The chiili was pretty good too.

I would definitely be coming back here if my craving for steamboat comes again.

Sushi Tei

Dac and I really liked the Dragon Roll and Raw Salmon Salad when we first tried it at the branch at Serangoon Gardens. The Dragon Roll was served warm. The Salmon Belly soup is not bad too. The prices here are much higher than other shops. You are paying for quality and freshness here.

We realised that the standard of the food at different branches were different. The food at the branch at Vivocity was not up to standard although the servings were much larger.

We also tried the branch at Raffles City but the experience was not as good as at Serangoon Gardens. Maybe we should just go back to Serangoon Gardens. The atmosphere there is much cosier and classier.

Victor's Kitchen

Personally, I do not really like the dim sum served here. I still find that the dim sum at Red Star is still the BEST. But i must give them the credit that the dim sum was served piping hot and there are a few items that i actually like.

The Chicken Feet and Siew Mai was a total disappointment for Dac and I.

Meng Kee Satay Bee Hoon

Had been a follower of this Satay Bee Hoon Store since its pre-renovation days. My parents had eaten at their store when they were in their courtship days too.

The queue is always super super long, probably due to them cooking and serving pretty slowly. But have to wait for nice food.

Hum Jin Pang Store

Have eaten Hum Jin Pang (HJP) from this store since my A'levels days. Found this jewel when I was working at URA during my holidays while waiting for entry to University. That would be like 10 to 12 years ago.

The stall owner, 70-year old Lee Chok, also known as Hum Jin Pang Ah Pek, is a legend. He stands tall & mighty with his fragil frame, hunched to knead and roll dough non-stop with only his daughter to help out.

The selling point of this HJP stall is that customers can fry the HJP themselves while he continously dumps dough into the huge wok of hot cooking oil. The cost is only $1 for seven small puff that are available in two types: one infused with five spice (outer layer sprinkled with sugar & salt) and the other filled with sweet red bean paste. ( outer layer is covered with sesame).

The only catch is that they only open from 1pm to 8pm. Sometimes they end early if they finishes their 25kg of flour.

Penang Vacation & Makan Trip 2007

Daddy, Mummy, Dac and I went to Penang on 6th Sept 2007 for a holiday. We were there for 3 days. We ate quite alot of nice food over there.

Below is a list of food that we ate in Penang. I have also tried to include their address for easy reference.

On the top of our list is :

1. Hokkien Mee / Prawn Noodles

A popular noodle soup with spicy broth made from prawn shells and heads. Served with slices of hard-boiled eggs, shredded prawns, water convolvulus, pork, crispy fried shallots and a spoonful of chili paste.

One Corner Cafe (Morning)
Swatow Lane

2. Ice Kacang aka ABC

Shaved ice with red beans, sweet corns, grass jelly, atap chee (the flesh from young seeds of a mangrove plant called Nypa Frutican) and jello. Sweet syrup and evaporated milk are generously drizzled over the shaved ice. This dessert is a great after a hot day in the sun.

Loh Eng Hoo Coffee Shop
84 Lorong Selamat

Business Hours: 11:30 am - 6:30 pm

3. Otak-Otak

Otak-otak is a Nyonya specialty. Wrapped in a banana leaf, Otak-Otak is basically spicy fish custard made of fresh fish fillets, eggs, and daun kadok (wild pepper leaves). Penang Otak-Otak is usually steamed while in Melaka and southern states, they are grilled. Both are equally delectable and it’s great as a snack.

4. Assam Laksa

Noodles in tangy and sour fish broth served with fresh vegetables such as mint leaves, onions, cucumber, lettuce, pineapple, red chili, and bunga kantan (torch ginger bud). A spoonful of Hae Ko (a dark and thick prawn paste) brings out the essence of this ever popular Nyonya creation.

Laksa Air Itam
Jalan Pasar (beside the Air Itam market)
Air Itam, 11500 Penang

This is the most famous Laksa stall in Penang. Managed by a father-son team: Ang Kak Seong and Ang Kar Foo, this Laksa is a must try! Dac and I found this abit too fishy for our liking though. Daddy and Mummy loved it though.

5. Chee Cheong Fun

Chee Cheong Fun is steamed rice rolls with oil, sweet sauce, and Heh Koe (prawn paste sauce) and topped with toasted sesame seeds, and fried shallots and chili sauce (if desired). Penang Chee Cheong Fun is very different from those served elsewhere in Malaysia. This is one of the must try hawker food in Penang.

6. Jiu Hu Eng Chai (Cuttlefish Salad with Water Convolvulus)

Another salad where blanched cuttlefish and water convolvulus are tossed with prawn paste, chili, sweet sauce, and topped with sesame seeds and grounded peanuts. This dish is very delightful. A must try.

7. BBQ Chicken Wings

BBQ chicken wings roasted to perfect texture. There is the taste of honey. Also available was BBQ drumstick which was real huge. Value for money.

8. Pork Innards Porridge

Delicious Pork porridge with generous servings of pork balls and pork innards. There is also a generous serving of fried pork innards.

9. Braised Chicken Feet

Macalister Road
10400 Penang
Business hour: 6 pm to midnight

10.Him Heang Tau Siah Piah

Best Tau Siah Piah in Penang. When we bought it, it was fresh out from the oven. Yummy!!!

11. Char Kway Teow

Char Koay Teow / Char Kway Teow is basically fried flat rice noodles with prawns, cockles, egg, bean sprouts, Chinese chives, and chili paste. Sometimes, slices of Chinese sausage are added. The best Char Koay Teow is usually fried with pork lard, which gives that extra aroma to the dish.

Loh Eng Hoo Coffee Shop
84 Lorong Selamat

12. Cendol

Cendol consists of pandan-flavored noodles, shaved ice, red beans in coconut milk and palm sugar syrup. Cendol is a popular dessert. Some tourists and visitors come to Penang just to try
this out!

Teowchew Cendol

13. Muar Chee

Muar Chee is a light snack consists of glutinous rice balls coated with grounded peanuts and sugar. As simple as it might sound to you, these little rice balls are very tasty. I crave for them every so often. It is abit different from the version that Singapore has as they also add fried shallots.

Muar Chee stalls at Gurney Drive Hawker Center

14. Loh Bak

Loh Bak or meat rolls are wrapped in beancurd skin and deep fried to perfection. At Loh Bak stalls, you can also order prawn fritters (Heh Chee), fried bean curds, and other side dishes such as octopus, century eggs, etc. Loh Bak are usually served with two dipping sauces in Penang: chili sauce and a starchy sauce flavored with five-spice powder and eggs. Penangites usually order a combo plate of Loh Bak, prawn fritters, and fried beancurb. Mummy packed some back to Singapore and my brothers loved it.
